Enjoy the Fall Foliage at Possum Kingdom Lake

Mid-October is the beginning of the fall foliage season in Texas. This is the time of year when you see the most beautiful colors in the largest state of the continental U.S., and Possum Kingdom Lake is one of the spots where you’ll see some of the most incredible views.

The lake is located approximately 80 miles west of Fort Worth, which, for honest Texans, is where the West begins.

Possum Kingdom Lake has much to offer the serious recreational camper. With more than 300 miles of shoreline and 20,000 acres of pure lake, the drives around the lake are gorgeous and scenic. Plus, there is a lot to do at Possum Kingdom, which features more than 400 campsites. Campers can fish, enjoy the lake on a boat, or hike the many awesome trails where you can get up close and personal with the fall foliage.

Fall Foliage in Texas is the Best of Anywhere

The entire state of Texas is like an oil painting on canvas in the fall. The leaves change colors and fall from the trees, leaving a collage of reds, yellows, and a variety of colors on the ground like a royal carpet. Possum Kingdom Lake is just one of the state’s recreational areas where fall foliage is a heavenly delight.

Possum Kingdom State Park in Palo Pinto County is within a rock’s throw. With more than 1,500 acres of recreational land, you’ll love experiencing the fall foliage in many ways.

On November 14, if you’re in the Possum Kingdom area, be sure to participate in the 7th annual Craft and Vendor Fair sponsored by the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce on the east side of the like in Graford.

No matter where you go in Texas, the fall season is the best because the weather is cooler and foliage is beautiful, but Possum Kingdom Lake is one of the state’s finest features.

What to See at Possum Kingdom Lake

While visiting Possum Kingdom Lake in the fall, you’ll want to visit Hell’s Gate, the channel that runs between the lake a beautiful row of cliffs on the south side of the lake. The view of Hell’s Gate is beautiful from on top of the water in a boat.

You can also fish at the lake. Fishermen go to Possum Kingdom Lake for a variety of fish including largemouth, white, and striped bass; blue and channel cat; and white crappie. Generally, you need a fishing license to fish in the state of Texas. However, the one exception is when fishing from the shoreline at a state park, so head to Possum Kingdom State Park and throw your line in the lake.

There are also beautiful places to hike, camp, picnic, and geocache where you can enjoy the fall foliage at Possum Kingdom Lake.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Sep. 24)

FAIR. Water stained; 82 degrees; 1.19 feet below pool. Stripers are slow to fair with live bait in 20-40 feet of water. Put your baits down in areas that you have marked fish recently and slowly move around with your trolling motor. You will bump into smaller schools of fish, but it will take patience while you wait for a bite. Sand bass are m fair to good moving quickly in 20-25 feet of water on main lake points and sand flats. Chrome and white seem to be out producing all other colors. Catfish are still fair to good with shad in 10-20 feet of water fished on the bottom. Baited holes are your best bet to catch numbers but will not produce big fish. Bait with cattle cubes and wait 2-3 hours before fishing. Use punch bait for best results on baited holes. Catfish should be spawning, so expect a slower bite. Water clarity is 2-6 feet of visibility but slowly becoming clearer. Report by TJ Ranft, Ranft Guide Service. This week has been a warm week, which has caused the bite to slow a bit. The fish are still moving fast. Water temperature is in the high seventies with 3-4 foot visibility. The striper and white bass are hitting topwater in the early morning and late afternoon. Fish are stacking up on shallow points in 10–20 feet, with sporadic surface feeding early and late when there is a little wind. Fish are feeding on very small shad so downsize your swimbaits, slabs and topwater baits. The eating-size 1–3 pound catfish bite is absolutely on fire. Limits are coming in fast, often within just a few hours, using punch baits and dip baits. For channels and blues, baited holes in 20–25 feet near points and flats are paying off. The crappie bite has picked up nicely. Minnows are the go-to in 12–20 feet of water around structures and brush. Largemouth bass are crushing topwater at first light, then shifting to shallow crankbaits around dock legs as the sun climbs. Shaky heads are producing steady catches as well. Once the sun gets higher, a Texas-rigged worm fished in 15–2
